Cat Canteri’s acclaimed 2014 debut When We Were Young was a layered, meticulously produced work that showcased her gentle vocal style and deeply personal lyrics. Touring the album throughout 2014 and 2015 led Canteri to a different place.
Canteri found herself on the road with a new band, playing for up to three hours a night on the Australian bar circuit, an environment that lends itself more to rocking out than to poetry and introspection. Canteri picked up the slide guitar and reworked songs she’d written for her previous outfit The Stillsons, giving the songs a raw, bluesy twist that fans immediately warmed to.
Canteri wanted to capture the new arrangements in a manner that was faithful to their live performance roots so she enlisted the talents of ARIA Award winner Jeff Lang, who recorded the sessions live to tape and also mixed the EP.
Canteri has worked with Lang previously on albums for Justin Bernasconi, Alison Ferrier and Jed Rowe. Their rapport shows: the performances on Late At Night are bold, relaxed and unselfconscious.
Late At Night reveals a dynamic songwriter and instrumentalist in a moment of exploration and re-invention. Allowing her talented band (Justin Bernasconi on guitar, Daniel Hobson on bass, Justin Olsson on drums) a free rein, they respond with a groove and swagger that borders on plain recklessness. Canteri ventures into new territory with the electric slide guitar and a new freedom in her vocal delivery, belting out the songs with power and urgency.
